When to Worry About Your Water Heater Noises

You have probably heard your water heater in Niwot, CO  make little ticking or tapping sounds from time to time. It can be quite confusing to know which sounds are normal and which ones are a warning that you may have a problem. There is no surefire rule about which sounds can indicate a faulty heater, but there are some guidelines to help you.

Sounds That Heaters Make

Ticking and Tapping - Those ticking sounds your heater makes are usually nothing to worry about. Heaters are designed with check valves so that water can’t flow through the pipes in the wrong direction. The ticking sound can either be the valves doing their job or it could be the pipes as water cools.
Crackling and Rumbling - The heater’s tubes can collect sediment. Water can get trapped under the sediment when the heater is not running. As the water heats it pushes through the sediment causing the crackling or rumbling. If this happens, it is time to either clean the heater or have it replaced.
Humming - Electric water heaters are typically set up vertically to the tank. Vibrations can result as water moves around the heater. The element can be tightened if this is the case.
Screeching - When water pushes through a small area it can cause this screeching or screaming sound. The valves may not be opening up properly, which will require heater repair.
Knocking - As water leaves or returns to the tank, the pipes can move slightly and hit the wall. This won’t hurt the heater but it could damage the wall. To remedy the situation, a wall hammer arrestor can be installed.

Routine Maintenance Can Help

Proactive care can extend the life of your water heater. Minerals found in water can create sediment buildup. A water softener can help to reduce that sediment in the heater. An annual water heater flush using a de-liming solution is also a smart idea.
